HOMESCHOOLING IN COLORADO

In Colorado, there are three legal options for homeschooling. These options are defined under Colorado Revised Statute § 22-33-104.5, which specifies the requirements families must follow to homeschool legally.

Option 1: Colorado Homeschool Statue

  • Who can teach: Instruction must be provided by a parent, guardian, or an adult relative designated by a parent.
  • Notice of Intent: Parents must submit a written notice of intent to homeschool at least 14 days before beginning to homeschool and every year following. This notice can be filed with any school district in the state and must include:
      • Children’s names and ages
      • Residence address
      • Hours of attendance to be taught
  • Instruction Requirements: Parents must provide:
      • 172 days of instruction per year, averaging 4 hours per day.
      • Education in the following subjects: the United States Constitution, reading, writing, speaking, mathematics, history, civics, literature, and science.
  • Record Keeping: Parents are required to maintain:
      • Attendance records
      • Test and evaluation results
      • Immunization records
  • Student Assessments: Students in grades 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 must be evaluated using a nationally standardized achievement test or assessed by a “qualified person” to determine sufficient academic progress based on the student’s abilities. Option 3: Homeschooling With a Certified Teacher If your child's teacher holds a valid Colorado teaching certificate, there is no requirement to file a Notice of Intent or conduct assessments. This applies whether the certified teacher is you or an individual you designate to instruct your child in your homeschool.

Option 2: Homeschooling with an Independent School

**Students enrolled in BRAVE Academy Homeschool meet this requirement**

Under Colorado law, parents may enroll their children in established "independent schools" within the state. Through this arrangement, parents provide instruction at home under the independent schools’ supervision.

Option 3: Homeschooling With a Certified Teacher

If your child's teacher holds a valid Colorado teaching certificate, there is no requirement to file a Notice of Intent or conduct assessments. This applies whether the certified teacher is you or an individual you designate to instruct your child in your homeschool.
